The Project
HS2 is one of the most ambitious infrastructure programmes ever undertaken in the UK. The high-speed rail line will connect London to Birmingham in just 42 minutes, spanning multiple phases and asset types—including viaducts, cuttings, tunnels, stations, and associated structures. Each of these elements requires reliable long-term protection against environmental damage.
The Challenge
To safeguard this nationally significant project, HS2 needed a robust solution to protect its concrete and structural assets from water ingress, freeze–thaw cycles, chloride attack, and long-term staining. The goal was to implement a durable protection system that would extend asset life, reduce maintenance costs, support ongoing maintainability, and provide incidental resistance to graffiti and surface contaminants—all without compromising appearance.
The Solution
Epicuro Hydrophobic Protection was selected as the ideal system. This invisible, waterproof yet breathable coating prevents moisture penetration and the resulting deterioration, including freeze-thaw damage and chloride ion diffusion.
Designed for efficient installation, the product can be applied quickly and dries within hours, reducing disruption on site. Over the following 5–7 days, it forms a complete, long-lasting protective barrier.
The Result
Applied across a wide range of HS2 assets—from station platforms to culverts—Epicuro Hydrophobic Protection provides a permanent defence against environmental damage. Its use supports the longevity and resilience of one of the nation’s most important infrastructure investments.
